Primarily a plein-air landscape painter, Joe Baker works in oils and pastels with occasional pieces in watercolors, acrylics, conte, charcoal and sculpture. Recent paintings exhibited include subjects from the Berkshires and other sections of New England, the Adirondacks, and travels to Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico and Arizona. Joe is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA) in addtion to CPS.
Joe’s vocation is computer programming. While he has retired from writing custom software and websites, he developed and continues to run the art exhibition entry system ShowSubmit (www.showsubmit.com). Prior to this career, he was for many years an instrument-maker. His violins, violas da gamba, and hardanger fiddles are owned and played by musicians on three continents, as well as being included in university and museum collections. He has a BA in biology from Princeton University and worked for five years as a cowboy in Wyoming before moving to the Berkshires in western Massachusetts in 1974. In addition to computer work and painting, he maintains his family farmstead and has worked as a contradance musician and caller for more than 40 years. Joe is on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS); he created the IAPS website and convention registration system and serves as IT Chair.
