“My paintings are a personal expression of my lifelong fascination with the visual effects of color, as revealed by the play of light across an array of objects. My goal as a traditional representational painter is to attempt to portray the limitless beauty of color, not only in every object itself but also in the light-filled interaction between objects, their shadows, and highlights, and the space in which they exist”.
Pastel is a wonderful medium for the exploration of the power and beauty of light. Being a realist painter, I find that pastel’s incredible variety of effects allows me to use luminous color to create a painted impression that conveys my own emotional reaction to the still life at hand. I work only from life and try to create settings that are tranquil and timeless, using translucent light and evocative arrangements of antiques, natural objects, fabrics, flowers and plants, and other materials.”
Claudia Seymour began to study art with a drawing course for “the absolute and utter beginner” in 1996 and picked up her first pastels a year later. Although trained in literature and criticism and has worked throughout her life as an editor, painting has become both her passion and her second career. Currently, she works principally in still life in pastel and oil, and she has studied at the Silvermine Art School in Connecticut, the Cape Cod School of Art, and the Art Students League in New York. She has been fortunate to study with several distinguished pastellists, including Richard Pionk, Christina Debarry, and Diana Willis, as well as the gifted oil painter, Eleanor Moore.
Claudia entered her first juried show in 1998 and won her first award later that year. She has now been included in over 60 juried exhibitions and won numerous prizes and awards, including first-place and best-in-show awards in both regional and national venues. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, the Connecticut Pastel Society, and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod; is a Resident Artist Member of the Salmagundi Club, an Artist Member (in oil and pastel) of The Pen and Brush in New York, an Elected Artist of the Kent Art Association; and serves on the Board of Allied Artists of America. Other memberships include the American Artists Professional League, Academic Artists Association, and Associated Pastellists on the Web. A representative list of juried shows includes those of the organizations listed above, as well as the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, Hudson Valley Art Association, International Association of Pastel Societies, and the Pastel Societies of New Mexico and North Florida.
