Clayton Buchanan

Clayton Buchanan paints those pieces of nature that speak to him through light, color, structure, and emotion. He has been fascinated with the Impressionist color concept for over 35 years and is still visually learning from nature. Looking for moments that come and go with a blink of an eye are a challenge for him to capture. Many of his figurative paintings are those moments, frozen in time, that capture life in movement, and give us a chance to recognize that fleeting beauty of light and color so easily lost forever. Pastels are his medium. Applying these brilliant colors layer upon layer, mixing on the painting surface, and doing so with energized strokes enhances his visual imagery.

Clayton Buchanan’s paintings are in private and corporate collections including the Elizabeth T. Greenshields Memorial Foundation, Montreal, Canada, and Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck, NY. He has done numerous portrait commissions throughout the Northeast and South and is currently conducting demonstrations and workshops. He received Best In Show, Connecticut Pastel Society Annual Member Show, 2011, and has won awards on a regional and national level. Memberships include the Guild of Boston Artists, Connecticut Pastel Society, Kent Art Association, CT, and Orange County Art Federation, NY. Clayton Buchanan studied Impressionist Painting with Henry Hensche in Provincetown, MA; Figure/Portrait Painting with William Draper, Art Students League, NY. He has his studio in Newburgh, NY.
